take back the unpack
Why hiring a professional organizer to help you move into your new home is an act of self care.
Thoughts from a professional organizer.
Moving can be a lot, and it is stressful even in the best of times. It is so easy to get burnt out when both packing and unpacking, and having someone who will leave no stone unturned is a major level up in this life transition.
I have met several clients who simply moved into their new home, put things “away” and resumed living their busy lives. This has led to boxes being shoved to the backs of closets, only to be used as shelving, never being unpacked. This also can lead to items or different categories of items living in multiple places in your home. (I am looking at you batteries, flashlights, and first aid kits). Not to mention those missing items… “Where on earth is the lid to my blender??”
Over time this leads to the multiplication of clutter, and never really feeling settled in your space. In most cases moving from one home to the next the storage is rarely the same. Systems that may have worked in your old home, may not transition into your new space. In addition if you had problem spaces in your old home, those can tend to follow you in your move. And this is a perfect time to address those issues.
Your home should be a place where you can come to escape the stresses of life, and in my experience that is not the case when your “stuff” is in the way, whatever that looks like for you.
I have had the pleasure of helping several clients move into their homes with a fresh start. This allows for thoughtful placement of all items and categories. (Even if your packing job was less than stellar).
When moving a client into their new home I will go room by room unpack your items, and create strategic homes for your things. We can use existing storage containers or if it is in your budget and wish to have product brought in that fits to your new space that is a great way to level up your organization.
Clients whom I have helped in these moves have all said things like “There is no way I could have done this on my own” and “I would have just given up without you.”
Whether it is myself, or you find another professional organizer, I highly recommend if you are moving to do yourself a favor and find some support. Someone who knows what they are doing (a well-meaning friend or family member is not always the right fit). You will reduce your stress levels, increase the joy of the move, and overall set yourself up for success in your new space. Let’s not forget your home is often a reflection of your mental health, and living in the chaos of all of your things rarely leads to your best self.
